Shave of the Day: February 4th, 2010

February 4th, 2010 by Scott

Thursday Morning:

Hot Shower/Proraso Glycerin Cleansing Bar/Hot Towel
1955 Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed
Swedish Gillette (Shave #3)
Rooney Style 3, Super
Proraso Red SC
Italian Floid A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

I’ve gotten some really great lather results these last two shaves and the only thing that I’m doing differently is I’m adding a fair amount of water to the bowl with the cream before I take a shaken out brush to it. Seems to be working very well for me. I’ll continue along with it and see how it goes. I got a pretty smooth shave from a used up Swedish Gillette blade. I usually get between 2 and 3 shaves with the Swede so this is normal. I really felt the burn after the application of the Floid but it dissipated quickly and I was ready to go after that. Another great shave.

Sunday Morning:

Hot Shower/Proraso Glycerin Cleansing Bar/Hot Towel
1955 Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed
Swedish Gillette (Shave #2)
Tweezerman Deluxe
Noxzema Lather SC
Aqua Velva Classic A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

I’m starting to regret my decision to sell off my Noxzema stash. Truth be told, I never got a great lather from this stuff until today. I think it has to do mostly with the brush that I used before. My Kent/Altesse is a pretty decent sized brush. In fact, it’s the largest one I own next to the Omega Pro 48 badger. When using the Kent/Altesse with the Noxzema, the lather that I always got was very foamy and airy and not very good. Today, using the Tweezerman, I got a very exceptional lather that provided very exceptional results. The Tweezerman, in my opinion, is a VERY underrated brush. It’s a great starter brush or a great brush to have in your regular rotation and you can’t beat the price at just $10-$15 a pop. Great shave today.

Tuesday Morning:

Hot Shower/Proraso Glycerin Cleansing Bar/Hot Towel
1955 Gillette Flare Tip Super Speed
Swedish Gillette (Shave #1)
Vulfix #18 Boar
Van Der Hagen Deluxe SS
P&G Old Spice A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

The Van Der Hagen soap is such a great performer and dirt cheap too. You couldn’t ask for a more reliable soap in terms of performance and local availability. You can get it for about $2.50 a puck at Wal-Mart or Rite Aid. If worse came to worse and no local stores around you have it, drugstore.com is a great source as well. Got a nice smooth shave with the Super Speed/Swede combo and the Old Spice, as usual, provided a great finish. Until next time.

1953 Gillette 40’s Style SS
Swedish Gillette (Shave #2)
C&E BBB
Palmolive Classic SC
Brut A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

I really enjoyed this morning’s shave. I know I say it every time I use it, but the European Palmolive Classic truly is a diamond in the rough. Great scent, great lather, great moisturizing properties and just an all around GREAT performer. The Brut after shave is a true classic and a must own for any wet shaver. Great stuff.

The Nivea cream is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Provides an incredible shaving experience every time I use it. The Cooling Blue provided a great finish. I’m glad that I have three bottles of it in my stash.

1953 Gillette 40’s Style SS
Super Iridium (Shave #1)
Kent/Altesse Pure Badger
FA Men Oceanic SC
Aqua Velva Original Sport A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

I enjoy the scent of the FA Men Oceanic cream. It’s very…….oceanic! The hardware combination worked out really well. My lather could have been better. It dried out a bit on my face but things seemed to have turned out fine. Irritation free and very smooth results. Good stuff!!

1953 Gillette 40’s Style SS
Swedish Gillette (Shave #2)
Omega Stripey Badger 63171
Ingram Lather SC
Aqua Velva Classic A/S
Vaseline IRML Lotion

Upon reading the news this morning about Aqua Velva losing it’s glass bottle treatment, I decided it would be a good day to; A) use some and; B) buy a gigantic glass bottle of it while I was out today to prolong my experience with such a classic wet shaving tradition. Everything about today’s shave was superb. Major face freeze from the Ingram and AV combo!
